While the Cradle of Humankind is a year-round destination, timing your trip correctly makes a big difference. The caves are damp by nature, so avoiding the rainy season helps keep the pathways manageable. Here is how to plan your visit around the seasons.

When is the best time to visit?

April through September are the best months for a trip to the Sterkfontein Caves.

These months fall during the South African autumn and winter. The weather above ground is dry and mild. This lack of rain improves cave-access conditions. It reduces extra water dripping into the already damp limestone caverns.

SeasonMonthsConditions
Autumn / WinterApril to SeptemberDry, mild, excellent cave access
Spring / SummerOctober to MarchWarmer, afternoon thunderstorms

Is the cave cold in winter?

The cave temperature does not change with the seasons.

Deep underground, the Sterkfontein Caves maintain a steady temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius year-round. You need a light jacket or sweater whether you visit in January or July. The narrow spaces and damp environment make it feel cool.

Can you visit the Cradle of Humankind in summer?

Yes, but you should prepare for sudden summer afternoon thunderstorms.

During the warmer months, heavy rain can briefly disrupt activities at the above-ground Excavation Sites. If you visit in summer, pack a compact umbrella or raincoat. Plan your outdoor walking and the Sterkfontein Exhibition Centre for the morning.

Which days of the week are best?

Visit between Tuesday and Sunday, as the Sterkfontein Caves are closed on Mondays.

Both Maropeng and the caves operate from 09:00 to 16:00. Maropeng is open daily, including public holidays. However, cave tours are capped at 30 people per slot to prevent overcrowding. Booking an early morning slot mid-week avoids crowds.
